“Rooted in Hull” is a local urban farming company and community designed to help-share and create a unique space to learn about urban farming.
Two friends, Adrian and Mark founded Rooted in Hull in 2014 with the goal of establishing an urban farm and educating the community about growing and eating healthy food, build a community around the sharing of ideas, skills and produce, to make Hull more food-resilient.
On Tuesday the 2nd of November 2021, Adrian Fisher, CEO of Rooted in Hull, met with the first cohort of the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course at Hull University.
The course programme leader and lecturer in Digital Design, Robert Consoli, arranged this meeting, which was attended by Jason Hayhurst, lecturer in digital media and screen subject Group Director, and Dr. Terry Westby-Nunn, a T.V. Production specialist with an interest in making a documentary about Rooted in Hull.
The meeting was an important opportunity for students to experience work with real-life client.
At the start, Adrian gave us an overview of the company’s history then he summarised what they do using the following points:
- Grow a variety of plants and herbs
- Provide food for and work with local marginalised families
- Environmentally-aware, collaborative work that is open to public
- Seek more support from the privileged strata of the society to help expand the project and make this planet a better place
Besides the agricultural aspect of their work, their site is an example of a wholesome environmentally-conscious place where you could see a kitchen, a bakery, a compost toilet, an art container, an event garden, solar panels, reed beds, water harvesting system, solar irrigation system, electric cargo bike and an apiary.
Following the interview, the students are expected to go through a 4-stage project covering and trying through it to create and finding designs that suit both parties.
